Obituary for George Douglas Nelson

George D. Nelson, 70, of Hill Road, Town of Kingston died Tuesday, May 7th, 2019 at home.

He was born in Queens, New York on October 2nd, 1948, a son of late Allen and Mary (O'Connor) Nelson. 

A veteran of the US Navy, he was a submariner on the USS Will Rogers - TM2(SS). Following his honorable discharge, he joined the American Legion. He was a welding inspector in several nuclear power plants. His last employment was with Archibald Heating and Air Conditioning prior to retiring in 2015. 

George was a huge music fan of different genres, but mostly rock. He enjoyed shooting league playing pool for the American Pool Players Association (APA) and poker where no wild cards were ever allowed. He also enjoyed building birdhouses, hiking and being out in nature, photography and was an avid reader, especially Smithsonian magazines. He always had a crossword puzzle in the works.  He was also enjoyed collecting coins.

George was very passionate and committed to donating blood at all of the blood drives held at the VFW in Kingston.

He is survived by one son, Matthew Nelson, one brother, Daniel T. (Susan) Nelson of Marbletown, one sister, Patricia (Dewitt) Archibald of Town of Kingston, one stepmother, Marjorie Nelson and one stepsister, Jennifer Nelson, both of Utah, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family has entrusted the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, with the care and cremation service arrangements for George. 

Cremation held at Wiltwyck Crematory.

Burial with military honors by Jotce-Schirick VFW Post 1386 Honor Guard will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 11:00 am in the Veteran's section of the New Paltz Rural Cemetery, GPS: 81 Plains Road, New Paltz, NY 12561.
